My oil pressure sensor went out last week, so while I'm replacing that, I want to put a mechanical guage in place for peace of mind.

I know there is a port with a plug on top of the oil filter, I think it's 1/8th thread but not sure.

Basically I want to put a guage there.

Anyone ever done this?

 

yup. The thread is 1/8" npt. I run the oil to a guage in the cab through 1/4" Swagelok SS braided tubing. I also have a ball valve installed in case I need to shut it off quick.

I am not planning on running mine into the cab. Just something under the hood in case the oil pressure sensor goes out again. I am lucky with my truck being an 2001, it still has an actual pressure sensor and the oil pressure guage on my dash reacts accordingly.

 

I was going to tap into the port there, but ended up putting mine on the driver side of the block in a port just above the ECM, I figure its a better representation of when pressure comes up in cold weather.

For what you are planning as an underhood backup I think its fine in the filter head port. And yes its 1/8"NPT.

 

I heard that the oil pressure in the filter head is about 20 psi higher than in the block, any one know for sure? It seems like the filter head is the perfect place for back up mechanical gauge.

 

Doubt there is more that 2-3 psi difference if any!!!

 

Shouldn't be with a clean filter.

 

I have my plumbed there with steel braided line running
to a gauge in my cubby hole in the dash.
