If the problem is that the starter won't crank, the first step I would take would be to replace the contacts in the starter. Quite possible that they are worn just to the point where sometimes they will work and sometimes they won't.

Welcome to the site.

Just a note, I'm not a mechanic by any means but yesturay my 99 cummins would not start. Guages and wait to start would turn on but as soon as I turned it over it would shut off everything. I'd have to wait about 3 minutes or so for any type of power to be restored to the guages. I charge both batteries ( I did not and do not think they needed it but I did it anyway). When I tried it tonight, SAME THING, she would not start. 2nd attempt 5 minutes later, I watched my batteries through the bottom of my hood as I turned the ignition on and WAHLAA, Sparks a flying. It starte but looks like the sparkes were coming from a little corosion around the batterie temperature cables. Thought you might want to check yours out.

If starter contacts are ok then look at:
Neutral/clutch safety switch on manual
Park safety switch on auto

Alright, Im new here, and bring a little knowledge to this problem but am still looking for a reason for the same problem
My truck will not crank but will start if rolled
The problem i found was that i am blowing the start relay fuse in the fuse box behind the driver's side battery
it may be a short in a wire or a short somewhere in the windings of the starter solenoid i dont know yet

Have the batts load checked separately. Make sure all connections are clean/tight to the batt and starter. If it won't crank it's either bad batt or starter contacts. Aftermarket starters will go bad due to the cheap/small contacts installed. If these are good then trace the wires back looking for a short.
