'98 24v KDP issues? How likely?

An acquaintance owns a NICE '98 24v and I told him of the KDP woes the 12valves were mainly known for. (He bought it new and has ~60K on the clock.)
I said that I believed that 98' 24v's also were suspect due to remaining stock of uncaptured dowelpin accy cases used on 98's. I recommended he tab his KDP ASAP as it will only cost him a front seal, a tab washer and some RTV sealer (& a little time).

MY QUESTION: Just how prevalent are KDP problems on 98 24V's???

I wanted to get my facts straight on 24v's for the next time I see him.
I'd hate for such a nice rig to get trashed on a $.98 dowel pin when it doesn't have to.

The earliest I've seen the new case is on a 10/99 build truck. I've done several '98 24 valves and all had the old case.

That's good to know... It bears out what I told him.
This guy owns a specialty/import/luxury car mechanic shop. He can handle the job in his sleep, but he was totally unaware of the KDP danger.
I also told him about the VP44/LP...
To be forewarned is to be forearmed...

Thanks

I've seen KDP damage on '99s also, but nothing newer. Cheap insurance to take care of it.
It doesn't matter how high or low the mileage is on the truck, it can strike at any time.

Hey guys I have 250K on my truck but I do have a fairly new reconned RV275 engine installed last july. Is there any chance it would have the KDP problem? What is this KDP? Thanks

I tabbed my 98.5. It did have the old style case as the pin was about flush with the edge of the timing cover.

BIGHEAD, some of the B5.9 engines had a problem with a simple dowel pin falling out of its bore in the block and dropping down into the timing gears with ugly results, hence the name "Killer Dowel Pin".
The dowel pin is located inside the upper left (facing the front of the engine) part of the aluminum accessory drive gear case, bolted to the front of the engine block.
Due to ganging of tolerances, poor assembly, or just plain bad luck, it can result in the pin working loose over time/temperature cycles/vibration, etc. Since not all engines exhibited a problem, Cummins and DC chose to deal with any "problems" under the original warranty rather than retrofit ALL susceptible engines. DC and Cummins act very ignorant when asked about any known dowel pin "problem". But a later designed accy. case has a necked down hole specifically to capture this same dowel pin to keep it where it belongs. *APPARENTLY* Cummins used up their remaining supply of old style accy cases well into the late 90's.. There apparently wasn't a definitive cutoff "date" or manufacturing change Serial Number to indicate if an engine had the new or the old style case.
This unknown transition was the basis for my 98 24v KDP question..
Unfortunately, it is NOT limited to a 12valve engine problem.
The preventative fix is rather painless (a washer) but the repair after the KDP disease strikes is very painful.
Do a search on KDP and get ready for a LOT of reading!

I did mine on my 98.5 when I had an oil seal leak... It had backed out a very long way and I do think it could have dropped out any time.
Funny how glad you can be for a bad oil seal
