When i accelerated today in 5th gear something happened. It now makes a loud noise like the gears are seriously grinding. 1-4 gears work just fine. any suggestions?

If I were you, I'd get the rear tranny cover off asap & check it out.

You could of ripped the splines out of the 5th gear syncro hub. I fixed one that we thought was 5th gear nut issue, but was the hub instead.

I have had the same problem (I think) for a few weeks now, still haven't found the problem. It shifts fine, 5th gear still works, just makes noise in 5th when on the throttle. Let off and the noise goes away. I don't want to drop the tranny, but I might have no choice. Hoping to find the problem before I do that.

You don't have to drop the hole tranny, just the rear cover.

Thankfully I haven't spent much time under my truck so I don't know exactly what you mean....but I am interested.

I know there are two plates with 6 bolts, one on each side of the tranny. Could you please explain further about how to do this?

Thanks.

Ram1999, you want to drain your tranny, drop the transfer case, and then remove the rear cover from the tranny. Then you can get to the 5th gear & see what's going on. Its not too hard. I think you may need to put a jack under the tranny while you do this. Be careful not to strip the bolts that hold the rear cover, its easy to do. If you want, send me a private message & I'll give you my info to talk you through it.
