47re problems

my brother has a 99 2500 2wd auto that is basically stock with the exception of a straight pipe and k&n air filter.on morning startups when leaving the first couple of blocks from home the transmission refuses to shift out of first gear. It usually only lasts for a 1/8 mile then it quits. It usually does not happen unless the truck has sit atleast 6 hours. The transmission seems to shift fine after the occurance and really does not act up unless under hard acceleration. On hard acceleration the truck does not want to shift untill hit around 3200 rpms or unless you let out of the throttle. we just changed the trans fluid, adjusted bands, adusted tv cable, and apps reset, the transmission has all the gears and they are strong, just running out of ideas any help would be appreciated. truck has 176,000 miles

Try the speed sensor. It screws into the tailshaft of the transmission on drivers side. I had the same problem with my wifes Jeep Grand Cherekee with the 42RE tranny. It could also just have alot of magnetic fuzz on it and need cleaning. Just unplug the plug and unscrew it clean or get a new one and install it and plug the plug back in. A 5 minute job. The hardest part is crawling under the truck.

Is the TC draining back into the resevoir? The check value may be bad and it takes a little bit to build pressure? I would not know how to check that without the equipment.

one more thing under hard acceleration which is about 3/4 peddle or more the problem is only with first gear. the rest of the gears really pull fine and shift smooth and firm. im going to try adjusting the bands again and pulling the vb to look at the kickdown and the bands

to check for TC drain back check fluid cold and not started. if fluid is WAY up on stick it has drainind back. converter drain back will cause slow/no movment at startup and clear up in a miniet or 2. if you still have origanil govoner solonids at that high milage I would replace them. if they are worn mechanaly it will cause eratic gov pressure but NOT set a code.

it ended up being the gov. pressure solonoid but when he got it back from the shop about 50 miles of driving it was 1 1/2 qts low and the fluid smelled like it was burnt but was still red in color. with the tranny full it shifts great
