47re Filter Question?

I installed my Mag-Hytec tranny pan 2 years ago. When I did the install, I didn't have the old style fabric 727D tranny filter so I used a new OEM plastic case filter. After the install I purchased a couple of the old style filters from Mag-Hytec. Anyway, the old style filter has 3 screw holes in it whereas the newer plastic OEM filter has 2 holes. Is there a third filter mounting screw in the valve body to use or do I just go with the 2 mounting screws? Also, I assume that the older style filter is mounted with the 4 hole side facing up? The old style filter has 3 screw holes and one larger hole that doesn't go all the way through on one side. That's what I'm referring to. I tried to call Mag-Hytec a couple of times but couldn't get a live person. I'm getting ready to change out the tranny fluid so I wanted to get this filter issue resolved before I get started. Thanks.

Nope, they changed it in 98 to the plastic style you have ( 2 bolt ) 97 and back use the 3 bolt.

I don't remember which way the bigger hole went on the old style.

the hole on the yellow filter is the pickup that goes towards the VB. If you look on the VB there is a 3rd bolt that you take out to put the open element filter directly on the VB. if you have the DD pan, you just use the 2 with the adapter.

You can buy those open element filters all day long at a normal parts store too.

Yup!
DTT recommends the older style filter. Big hole up....captures the return fluid so it drips through the filter.
I just use two bolts.

Thank everyone for their replies. Even though I have the standard Mag-Hytec pan, I'm just going to use the two bolts like you do on the plastic case filter.

you'll stress the open element filter by doing that. Just look at the VB, with the filter held in place, and you'll see bolt #3 that needs to come out to make it fit flush

RowJ, the big hole in the open element filter is for the pickup to the pump, so maybe what you said I'm not following.

Thanks Fred - I will use the three bolts to hold the filter in place. I sure don't want to mess up the filter. I'm a bit confused as to why the double deep pan can get away with using two bolts for the open element. By the way, thanks for letting me know that the old style filters are available at the local auto supply store - I won't need to order them from Mag-Hytec anymore.

Thanks....I had it backwards. Just decided on my own from eyeballing it.

The DD pan has an aluminum spacer to drop the filter much lower, so it only uses 2 bolts regardless of filter.

RJ, np, you made me think a bit. Thought I said it wrong.
