2001 Surging Problems
2001 Surging Problems
Hi all,
I am not a mechanic, don't claim to be. Just want things to work. My '01 paid off Trucks is surging. By this I mean, you have power, and then your foot can be on the floor, and nothing. Then it will grab hold, and take off. I haul horses, this is not fun. This is what we have done to the truck.
1. new fuel filter
2. new lifter pump
3. shop found the sensor fuel line or the fuel line pinched, they spliced, thought we were good to go. ran great the first 2 days. 3rd day it started doing it again.
I have ben told to have them check the speed sensor on the engine since that will not code out. To also check the throttle position sensor. Can anyone confirm not confirm these two things. I have not had my truck for 2 months. I am getting alittle annoyed.
Questions: If the fuel injector pump was going out ($1600 part) would the truck run or not run? This did not code out for them.
thank you!

Welcome to DTR !
Sounds like you're doing all the right things....it also sounds like the Dead Pedal Syndrome, indicative of a dying IP (VP44); Do you have gauges, and, if so, how has the fuel pressure been? Did you swap out the LP due to a LP comdition, or because of dead pedal? I have heard of the IP going south without throwing a code until it was completely toast....
Please fill out your signature (under "User CP") so we can all tell at a glance what you're rolling with
- again, welcome aboard!

thanks rauschbo - just what I wanted to hear, the Injector pump going out.
We put on a new lifter pump becuase the pressure show 10 or something to that matter, when it should up by 14. so the new lp went on.......
I'm losing my patience, pretty quickly. My questions is is the Dodge people know these things don't code out, why don't they make it so they will.
We did put a low pressure sensor on to show when the fuel pressure was low.
Thanks for you reply, and advice.
I went uder the user Sg to update, like asked too. Why is nothing showing?

- there is SOME hope, you might try the APPS reset procedure (Search for APPS Reset), this can also give you the Dead Pedal syndrome - more often than not it is the IP -
- good luck, hope it is NOT the IP -

Your symptom was the ONLY one I had when my VP44 failed. No good when you can push the pedal to the floor and she doesn't respond
You can get a pump for a little cheaper than what yoy mentioned, more like $1,000 even.
Your post has been moved from the 2nd Gen forum to the 24 valve forum, and there is a redirect left in the 2nd Gen so its easy for you to find.
I'd venture a guess and say its the APPS. I'd think that the shop probably disconnected the cables when working on it, resetting the ECM and probably the APPS, hence why it worked well for two days and came back on the third. My truck is surging as well at low rpms and part throttle, and has done so since I had a new IP put on. I'd start with the cheap parts first instead of the expensive. Granted $300 (or $530 in my case) for a APPS isn't cheap, it beats $1-2k for a VP44. But that is only a semi-educated guess.

APPS = Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor, formerly known as the TPS, or Throttle Position Sensor
ECM = Engine Control Module, also called the Electronic Control Module - essentially the "brains" of the truck

i have heard of people replacing their 24v vp44 injector pumps with 12v p7100 injector pumps has anyone heard of that the 12v pumps are cheaper and you can turn the fuel pump up on them with a little work just wondering if it was really possible to put a 12v pump on a 24v truck
Yes its possible. I think when my VP44 goes, that may be the better route to go. I wish I did that instead of replacing the VP44. Haisley has parts for doing the conversion. I know they have oversized prebent lines for $500 or so, but I'm not sure what else is included for the other $1000 the kit costs. Check out their website, I'm sure it'll say.
