2001 24 valve newbie question.

I just purchased a 2001 24v 3500. It has 186K on it. It appears the lift pump is stock or at least on there for a long while. I just tested the fuel press with a test mechanical gauge and it read about 5-6 lbs at idle. I removed the filter and it looks pretty dirty. When I went to bump the key to try to refill bowl it won't fill up? Also the lift pump only seemed to buzz for a 2-5 seconds?

I know I am ordering the big line/relocation LP kit with updated LP in the morning but I wanted to try to get it back running to recheck fuel pressure.

Also it ran really well on 2 long test drives before I bought it and no smoke.
Any opinion if VP44 is hurt or how to tell?

I am brand new to diesel and this site so any help would be appreciated.

I had my test gauge hooked up at the schrader valve at the VP44 fuel line coming from bottom filter bowl. I noticed another schrader at the input to the filter bowl that I didn't try.

So how do I get the filter bowl to refill...shouldn't I just have to turn on key or bump key switch?

Thanks

I am supposed to look for bowl to refill with the cover off, filter out and just turn key on the let bowl fill....the reinstall the filter & cover to less than 25 ft lbs ?? Is this correct? I thought the lift pump was supposed to run for 20-30 seconds approx?

if you just bump the starter it should come on.

New to me 2001 3500 w/ LP bad at purchase

Oh well, looks like a bad lift pump for sure. LP sounds kinda sick and not like a regular gas electric fuel pump sound I am used to.

Does anyone know how to check if the VP44 is damaged? It ran fine on two test drives.....plenty of power and no smoke.

Also would it be worth checking the pickup in the tank and how hard is it to do?

key on,off,on.off then on and leave it on, watch your odometer for codes. 0216 and your vp is hurting, about the only way to check the vp.

I did bump it with the filter out...No fuel is refilling the bowl...not even a little.

When I had the test gauge on the scrader it took 30 seconds for the press to read 5-6 at idle and less off idle.

I am going to replace the LP anyhow soon as I find where to buy it. I am going to try the code retrieve. I do have a OBDII computer scanner. Won't that work also? I have only used it on gas applications.
