Newbie buying 2001 ctd, Need advice from you

Hey guys!!! I've owned an older generation CTD for a long time and I'm buying a 2001 quad cab, short bed with matching camper top, bed paint looks new from factory with little scracthes, towing package, power everything, cloth seats, and 82,000 miles for $21,900.

Does this sound bad or good? The truck is very clean under the bed, hood, and interior.

What are some things that I should look for before purchasing?
What breaks first?

Thanks

I would check for the "53" block and check the fuel pressure before you buy it. One of the biggest issues (and most common) with the 2nd generation trucks is the weak lift pump. If the pump on the 2001 has been running weak or not running at all, the VP 44 pump could be on it's way out $$$. I would also check for the 53 block, which is prone to cracking. On a brighter note, I have a 2001 and have had NO problems. I love it.

Is the HO models a 6 speed only? or did the autos have a HO addition?

The "53" block is a block that was made in mexico I think. These blocks tend to be weaker then the other blocks. Some guys have had to get new blocks because theirs cracked. If I remember right you look for a 53 stamped just above the oil pan just below the filter mounting on the passenger side of the block. It can also be seen on the right side of the block though. The numbers are large and easy to find. I also have a 01 that I love, but it doesn't have the "53" block. There are some guys that do have the "53" with no problems, but I would still stay away from one with a "53".

Here's a link with some pictures to help.

Tommy,

The HO models from these years came only with a 6-speed, the NV5400. Good transmission, and from what I have read you really don't pay a fuel economy penalty with the HO engine. This 24-V unit is more noisy than you may be used to. It's recommended to install a fuel pressure gauge soon after you purchase the truck and monitor for a drop in fuel pressure. This indicates a failing lift pump, and can save your electronic VP-44 injection pump.

To me, with that mileage, $22k seems steep. 4WD or 2WD? I have seen these for quite a bit less, but the EX-cab short-bed model is rather popular, therefore keeping prices elevated. The '02 models (and possibly '01.5??) added rear disk brakes; if you can afford to, try to find one of these as they have much stronger braking capabilites. I would reccommend driving several and really evaluating your needs before committing to one unit. Good luck in your search - don't feel bad asking questions - that's what this forum is for!

According to the VIN# it was made in Saltillo, Mexico. I don't know the date though, I'm going to the car lot today and look under it more closely while their closed.

Very nice looking truck.

Make sure to run a carfax or an autocheck.

I did, thanks, it came out clean. It appears to be an one owner. The price is a little high, but the truck is very clean. The camper top is an A.R.E. that's about $1500.00 itself.

There're more trucks around in this area that are older and have more miles. I still have my eye on this one.

Thanks for the advice and opinions

Would the 2001 be covered under a factory warranty?

Tommy,
It depends on the in-service date. Mine was 12/00 (so techincally an 01.5) and the powertrain warranty is 5/100 so I have until December of this year. I bought mine (see below) in October of last year with 72,6 on it from a dealer in upstate NY for $18,000. It's not cherry but it is/was in great 1-owner condition with just a few blems on it.
Something else to be concerned over - the front ends on these trucks are notoriously poorly built. Note I said built, not engineered. The parts do not stand up well to the stresses and demands of a heavy duty 4x4 front end. I was prepared for a sloppy front end and was not disappointed. I just went into it knowing. I had to put a track bar on shortly after getting it. That and a front end alignement VASTLY improved the disposition. So drive it a lot and up at highway speed. That will tell you a lot.
I did have the turbo replaced under warranty recently. The waste-gate was stuck and the truck was not producing. My dealer replaced the turbo.
