1998 Break-over Point For 24-valve

I am looking at a 1998 Dodge/Cummins that is quite some distance from me.

I am waiting to contact the seller, to ask them, but would like to know sooner.

I can clearly see the date of manufacture, in a picture; it says "4-98".

When in 98 did the twelve-valve stop and the 24-valve start??

Thanks.

Up to 98.4 are 12 valves after 98.5 they are 24 valves.

Hope this help ya.............
My 98.5 24 valve was built in late jan or early feb of 98 if I remember correctly (not close to me at the moment). So an April built truck would surely be a 24 valve.

If you can get the vin, the 8th digit will be "D" for a 12 valve and "6" for a 24 valve. Also, the door badge will say Cummins Turbo Diesel on a 12V and Cummins 24 valve on a 24 valve.

I looked at a not-so-good picture of the engine compartment, and the location of the injector-pump has that rounded hood-looking business, like I see in better pictures of 24-valve engines, instead of the obvious row of injector lines that can be seen on a P-pump.

Thanks for all the information.

Can you read the top of the valve cover?

No.

These sales pros are expert at camera angles, showing a good quality photograph, without being able to read the vital, deal-breaking, information.

I found the VIN, and the eighth digit is a "6", so it is a 24-valve.

I have learned, in my quest for Dodge/Cummins trucks, that if the type transmission is not listed and the subject of transmission is artfully avoided in the ad and phone conversations, the truck will definitely be an automatic; whereas, if the truck has a manual transmission, it will be obviously stated in a dozen places.

Also, sneaky dealers will erroneously list the transmission type as MANUAL, to get the truck to come up in a search limited to manuals, even though the transmission is automatic; I have seen this trick played many times.

Often the only clue is the lack of a shifter in an interior shot.

Thanks for the information.
