Question 02 24 valve Engine question

A friend has an option to purchase an 02 club cab 2wd truck from the company he works for. It body wise is pretty nice, has about 180K miles on it, but has a couple mechanical issues. It starts right up cold with no miss or hesitation, but won't run down the road at any speed until it warms up for ten minutes or so. It gets to 1500 rpm & then acts like a governor is holding it back........the engine just quits fueling above that rpm till you drive it several miles (at 35 mph mind you !), then it runs fine........Any ideas ??

It never misses or stalls........It just gets the fuel backed off just like a governed engine.

(Yes it's full of fuel.......& fresh) Their service driver who had used it most recently said it's been doing this for awhile, & that's why the company is retiring the truck.

Any quick things to check ??

Thanks

Tom

He doesn't want to purchase the truck & have to spend more on repairs then he paid for the truck.

Cylce the key 3 times ending with it on.
Then the codes come up in the odo window.
Check the fuel pressure. If it is lower that 5 under load, the lift pump and possibly the VP-44 ( injection pump) could be bad.

Do the key trick. If it shows a code P0216 tell him it will be about a 1k fix if he does it himself. That is the code for the injection pump.

Is it an Auto?? Did you try warming it up in Neutral for 5~10 minutes first?
Mine seems to take a while to fill the TC before it gets moving.

The MAP/Superboost sensor, about $83.00 will give you the same symptoms also.

It has the dreaded po216 code, as well as 3 other codes that come up. I'll post the other codes when he emails them to me. Sounds like it might be best as a parts truck.

Thanks for the reply's.

Its gonna take more than a grand to get it going. The vp will cost at least a grand and then a good lift pump will cost another $500. If he's getting it for a good price it will be worth it to get it running again not just a parts truck.

I guess it can be a number of things but mine was the VP-44. Fuel filter being clogged would not be affected by temperature. Mine did this for more than a year before it died. At least it died in the garage instead of 1000 miles from home. The code should show the problem.

If he already owned it it might be different.......He hasn't bought it yet..........They want $2500 for it as-is and the PS pump is out too..........No power steering or hydro boost for the brakes........I drove it Thursday.......It was tough to say the least !

So add $1000 for the vp, $500+- or so for the steering pump fix, and their $2500 asking price & it's up to 4K for a 2WD 02 truck with 180K on it that needs assembled..........

Might be easier to find one that already runs without the work ??
