01 sport has some problems, need suggestions

Hey guys, my brother in law has a 01 sport dually with the SO engine and 47re. This morning he went to start it, to find it wouldn't fire. After 3 tries he gets it to start and it billows out white smoke and idles noticeabley louder. During the day it ran fine, cranked fine, and he said it felt on-par in performance. No differences in oil level. We looked at the lift pump and see its leaking. He also mentioned that when the last cold front came down his grid heaters didn't seem to cycle ( he seen no voltage drop ). When I did the key trick all I seen was P PCU. (maybe doesn't work on 01s) I need suggestions on where to start, options for affordable lift pumps, and where to look for the gridheaters issues. Thanks in advance, and I'm hoping I'm not beating a dead horse. I haven't found definite answers using the search function...

He has gauges, but only trans temp, boost, and pyro. When I did the key trick it only showed P PCU.

At the end of the key trick it will say P-done, at least mine does. It takes a second or two. Start cheap and work towards the pump, it could be as simple as a dirty filter or a bad tank of diesel. Just a thought, Kurt

Check the FP then get back to us and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks for the replies. I believe he is gonna buy a stock replacement pump right now since he's limited on $$$ but upgrade to a fass or gdp next year. Hopefully that will do the trick. It's gonna sit until he fixes it, so it doesn't cause any more damage to the vp44 if it caused anything.

untill he gets gauges, go to the local auto parts store and borrow a guage and hook it up to the injection pump and see what he is getting...before he starts blowin money on pumps, and filters, i would check and see what the pressure is, that will tell alot..

Thanks, I will advise him to check the fuel pressure before he gets too deep into it. What would be normal psi on this truck, and what psi have ppl seen with bad or on the way out pumps?

Above 8 lbs is ok. Anything below that is gonna cause the vp to start sucking fuel to feed itself. Of course 0 lbs means you need a new lift pump and possibly injection pump. Hopefully he's got some psi and didn't waste the vp!

Don't forget to check your batteries. Mine did similar things this summer, turned out my stock batteries were toast....

dont forget to check/ replace lift pump to as it usually causes the injection pumpe to go out. You can replace vp44 with the HO version pump form the six speeds and get this it may be cheaper because of less demand. works fine on mine but cant used the same power chips. Also it shoule start fine at any thing above about 38 degrees with out waiting forl the grid heater working or not.
99 340k mi on mine

Has anyone ever replace the engine speed sensor? Mine starts fine if it is plugged in. If not when is gets below 40 if blows white/gray smoke and idles rough until it warms up after a few minutes. Is there some kind of temperature sensor that I can check?

Sounds to me like a typical fuel leak where it becomes troublesome to start if it's been sitting for too long. Start it up frequently and it'll start right up because the pressure hasn't bled off yet. I'd fix the leak, and check the LP pressure.
