on my getrag I noticed I can pull the shifter straight up out of the trans at least 2", I was affraid to pull any farther.

No resistance at all, stays there untill I push it back.
I have never had the shifter out or the boot off.

Nope, that's not right at all. In order of inside to outside you should have the following:
1--cone-shaped spring
2--shift arm that the lever threads to
3--shift arm retaining ring
4--internal snap ring (to hold the retaining ring in and against the spring)
5--two set screws that thread into the side of the toploader that also hold the retaining ring in place.

Something is missing in your equation...I'd guess the snap ring and now only those two set screws are holding things together---and they have a tendancy to wander...

 

So if I am reading that right mine is falling to far in? I will probably have to take it appart to grasp what is going on.

I looked at the getrag rebuild pdf and it does not show any parts of that assembly.

 

Pull the shifter boot and see what you can find.

 

I can get some pics of my spare toplader after dinner if need be.

 

I'll bet the spring is broke or the set screws/snap ring that hold the collar in the tower are broke or gone, the shifter can't really fall in, the shift rails block it.

 

The shifter assembly is no tconsidered part of the tranny per Dodge.
Mine was doing the same thing when I bought it and I was missing the snap ring. Once I understood how it was suppossed to go together it only took about 20 minutes to repair....
