does you belt tensioner move too??

i just redid my belt, belt tensioner, water pump, and valve cover gaskets on my 91 d-350 non intercooled. when i fired it up and did my final check over i noticed that my belt tensioner was slightly moving around. i went and looked at my 93 cummins and the tensioner doesnt move. i doesnt move much just a little bit.

That's normal. Your 93 might be stiff from age. It might be that the elasticity of the belt is not perfectly uniform through out it's length and the tensioner is simply compensating for the variance. Or that you are getting a slight harmonic "bounce" at idle, try watching it at different engine rpm's.

I checked at different role, it stays about the same..I figured it wan normal but I figured I'd just ask. I replaced it because I was getting a metallic clanking noise when the truck was running I figured it was the water pump and belt tensioner. But I still have the noise..sounds like its could be coming from the vacuum pump..thanks for your help!

lol that happend on my dads jeep! i checked that too! its nice and tight! i looked at the tensioner where it mounts on the motor is not moving, just the part with the pulley on it. after further checking and looking around on my lunch break i felt underneath the crossmember and one of the steel bands on the tranny cooling lines came loose and was rattling on the lines. thats why i couldnt see what was rattling lol! it was hiding!
