Who runs a straight pipe exhaust?

I'm thinking of doing this to my stock exhaust system. What are the side effects?

More smoke? More power? More noise?

Cheers,
Joe

Yes, more noise, but it's good noise to me. ;D The sound of a straight piped first gen is a beautiful thing....

Re:Who runs a straight pipe exhaust?

Ditching the muffler is a good move. Getting rid of the kinks is even better. I 3"straight piped mine with some mandrel bends before going to the bigger turbo and 4" and it helped a lot on EGT and "Out of the hole" response. Bigger is better and smooth is awesome. Get the kinks out, You won't be sorry.

Mine smoked like a train before I cut the exhaust out of it and put in 3'' mandrel, straght pipe of course. The best part about this is when your truck looks good and sounds good everybody looks when you drive by

I have a 3 1/2" straight pipe. Less smoke, more power, better milage, cooler temps, sounds cool.

dave

Re:Who runs a straight pipe exhaust?

I got a little bit more power & less turbo lag, less mileage, but the noise was horrible. Couldn't hear my radio over the noise & opening the rear slider was out of the question. I put on a 3" flowmaster & now I'm happy. Still sets off alarms in parking structures, but the raspy noise is gone & mpg went up. Try the straight pipe if you want to, but keep $100. in your pocket for a muffler when the novelty wears off & you want to enjoy your truck again & listen to the radio or open your rear slider.

Re:Who runs a straight pipe exhaust?

I just straight piped mine last week and I love it. The noise is less than the gasser Jeeps I used to drive, with burned out glasspacks. I just wish I had removed the cat also, but the muffler shop here in Vancouver said that the fine wasn't worth it. [undecided]

Re:Who runs a straight pipe exhaust?

Just had a 4" Cat Back kit from Dynomax installed that goes on a more recent 9x truck. Wow, what a difference getting rid of that muffler and tail pipe made.. I gained 2 Psi of boost with this kit installed and still have a muffler.. Nice sound, but I do get a pretty good drone at 2200 Rpm..

She's a tight fit, but a good shop in Calgary put it on for me in about 2 hours.. 8)

I like having that big 4" hangin out, not many 1st gens do.. ;D .

J-eh

Re:Who runs a straight pipe exhaust?

if you do get a muffler, get a flow-through. flowmaster isn't the way to go for performance (sorry fishermansteve). straight-piped.....yum! ;D some poeple look at you with an awe-struck look, some don't even notice that the loud vehicle driving by isn't an 18-wheeler.

Tom
