white smoke in the cold

I noticed tonight and this morning( zero when i started the truck) that it looked like a gasser. Meaning it had like the white smoke steam look coming from the pipe. That some thing normal for the truck in that cold weather or is some thing wrong??

It seems when it gets really cold out (10 degrees or below) diesel's let out steam just like gassers. I've noticed that with mine and other semis I see going through town.

Just unburned fuel, nothing to worry about. Think how pulling trucks and tractors look when they're warming up--lots of white smoke. Take a whiff of it and you'll know it's not steam. Prolly looks something like this:

^^^ what he said^^^^
as long as it's clearing up when the engine gets up to operating temps, its not a sign of a problem...

Yup Compression ignition engines need to build up so heat to burn efficiently...which is why it kills me when folks fire these things up stone cold, t-stat not open, and romp the crap outta them. With no or uneven heat in the cylinders, the fuel just washes down and threatens our precious crosshatching...or gets blown out the tailpipe...

Speaking of the white exhaust, even if the engine is warm and its -27 C or so, you'll get the white exhaust. I was towing our 16 foot tandem and there was a good white stream out the pipe and down the trailer on the highway. Nothing to worry about unless its REALLY white and smells sweet...

Just my observations...

Yup. Watch any tractor trailer going down the highway on real cold mornings. I saw a couple good streams of white smoke this morning...followed by one truck gelling up, unfortunately

What was his reasoning for that?

Although unnecessary, it won't harm anything

If not sure what the smoke is, walk into the cloud. If it makes you choke and your eyes start watering, that's white smoke.
