Stupid question, but I swear I just went through the whole service manual twice. What's this little round thing, and what are those tubes supposed to be doing? How do I reconnect them?

Notice the chewed tubes

The round thing on the heater lines? It opens and closes so the heat can flow into the heater core to warm the cab.

Which line is chewed? The little grey vacuum tube?
If so you could butt it together and shrink wrap it, then splint it from the outside so it does not kink. I did that on a road trip to get my 4x4 lines working on my 2nd gen.

I've never experienced "rest creed thru" or even heard about it. What exactly is that?

It is a vibration damper.
It is used on the radiator or transmission cooler lines.

The small tubes are part of the cooler lines.
They reduce noise and movement in the lines.

Nothing is missing or broken.
They do not connect to anything else.
They just sit in place on the line.

I agree with Oliver...but I will amend that the actual function of this heater control valve is to shut off the coolant flow through the heater core to minimize the heat in the HVAC box when you turn on the AC system.

If I remember correctly these are not reproduced or available in the aftermarket...at least the last time I checked a few years ago. I needed a new one for my crewcab and after extensive searching I found one from a 90's Ford Ranger that had the correct hose connections and functioned as original.
