What is this thing?

I was under my hood today and I noticed a cylindrical thingy on the passenger side of the motor. It is under the Exhuast manifold and it has two lines coming to it. The lines go to the transmission, which really surprised me.
But what is this thing and what does it do?
Thanks,
Wheelo

Transmission oil cooler.

It, um, cools your transmission oil.

I haven't even noticed it before on my truck; I just saw it today when I was looking at my factory service book...

Yup it's the tranny cooler. When I was putting a 12cm housing on my truck I moved my exhaust back and just with my luck my exhaust touched a line coming off the back of the cooler and it was seedy enough that it broke open and everything started draining itself. The funniest part was, that was the only line on the whole truck that was THAT bad. All that heat does it I figure. Moreorless it was probably best it blew then when I had everything apart and loose.

But it is in between the cooler on the front of the truck and the transmission. Or is my cooler(radiator design) on the front of the engine something the previous owner installed?
Thanks,
Wheelo

Yep, you have both. The one on the side of the engine also serves to warm the trans fluid in cold weather. There was also a dealer installed option for a 3rd cooler mounted under the bed on the passenger side with an electric fan on a thermo switch. That raised the GCVW 2,000 lbs.

If it's both a cooler and a warmer then heat exchanger is the correct term. Sounds better than oil heater-cooler.
