What is the minimum ca to turn over?

What is the minimum cranking amps to turn over a 1st gen cummins? My dad is saying my starter is out but I don't think the 890 CA (710 cca) battery is enough. The starter engages but doesn't turn. Thank for the help again guys!

Your starter contactor is probably bad and not making contact between the battery and the motor. The solonoid is engaging but the contactor isn't making contact. You can buy a kit to fix the problem.

You can also replace the brushes while you're at it.

Look in the stickeys and there should be an article showing just what to do.

I ran an 850 cca battery for a couple of years. The gear driven starter works very well.

The gear starter is pretty thrifty. Battery isn't a big factor unless you have to crank long, or in below zero weather. Then a good, heavy one is everything.

I have fored mine up with a spare 750 CCA battery before.....no issues. Your fathers truck has other issues, starter, battery cables etc.
