What engine oil do you use....
i use rp in the 205, had it in the rear when it blew, also in the outback's diffs, but I drip out about a quart every month , so when I fix my pan and turbo drain leaks, I wouldn't mind switching to a higher end oil. the cold here pulls the fluids out, it sucks.
I've been running 15w30 Mobil 1 since I got my truck, last oil change I switched to 15w30 Amsoil. The Amsoil is suppose to last 15000 miles compared to the Mobil 1's 5000 mile rating, so far I haven't seen difference in the two and I'm at about 5 months 3000miles on the Amsoil. I have always used Napa Gold (WIX) filters in everything I own.
I've run lots of stuff, usually whatever is a good oil and that is the best deal but i usually run Delo 400 15w40 and I just put Rotella T in this a few weeks ago on my last oil change. Usually run Fleetguard filters. Just none of that CJ4 crap! I will be tryin Amsoil out on my next oil change and see if the talk about it is really true. They say you don't have to change it til 15,000 to 25,000 miles, but with the soot I'm puttin out, I don't think thats a good idea.
The API, (American Petroleum Institute) classifies engine oils. The current classification is CJ-4, which came online in October 2006. It was created, at the behest of most of the engine manufacturers, to have less ash because when we burn oil, (and EVERYBODY burns a little bit when the engine is cold, no matter how new your engine is) we create ash, which plugs DPF's.
CI-4, brought online September 2002, was the previous standard, but will probably be taken off the shelves this year, if it hasn't already been. Personally, I'd rather use newer technology than old if it means better protection for my engine. But in this case I'm not sure it does. Ash helps break down acids which built up in oil as we burnt it. The acid came from combusting sulfur in diesel, which has since been negated by ULSD so really the only reason to have CJ-4 is to keep the EPA happy.
And, CJ-4 costs more.
Clear as mud?

Well I picked up a 5 gal pail of the Walmart "Super Tech" diesel, 15W40 engine oil, thanks for all the advice. This has been a great thread with lots of good info.

it's STILL rated CI-4.
