Since I'm new to diesel motors in my personal vehicles I was curious what brand and weight you guys prefer to use when you change your oil.
Also how often do you change your oil? Any additives or things of that nature to consider?
My CTD is all stock, supposed to around 153K on it, non I/C. Will be used for everyday running around and going to work. Might use it in a month or two to go to California to pick up a car.

I use Royal Purple 15w40. In my cummins I go 10k miles, change the filter, go another 10k miles, change oil and filter. My Duramax I change just the oil every 6k miles and the oil every 30k miles. It runs a bypass oil centrifuge though and keeps the oil very clean.
'nother vote for valvoline p-blue. Cummins uses it for factory fill, so that's good enough for me
Lately, I've been using the tractor supply house brand. It meets the cummins spec and is more cost-effective, at least in this area.

Call me stubborn and old-timey, but I refuse to use any oil that is rated API-CJ4.
I use 15W-40 CI4 of whatever brand I can find it in, usually John Deere.
Before the government mandated change-over to the
watered-down CJ4 stuff, I used mostly Valvoline Blue or Chevron Delo 400.
Back when Shell Rotella T was still Shell Rotella T, I used it in everything; I quit the Rotella way back when they sold the rights to the name to some other company, Pennzoil if I remember correctly.

I see you are in British Columbia. I'm assuming it gets as cold if not colder than here in Maine just under Quebec and next to New Brunswick, IDK, maybe you guys get more mild west coast weather. Either way, I saw a night and day difference in how fast the engine cranked when it was 0*F or lower in my old Mercedes 300D. New battery in it, glow plugs, and controller, and I couldn't turn the engine fast enough to get it to start.
I changed from Rotella 15w40 to Rotella Synthetic 5W40. Car turned over wonderfully in even colder weather. I told my dad the same thing when he had trouble in his Powerstroke. He changed to 5W40 and his problem went away as well.
It doesn't necessarily have to be Rotella, the first number being lower is what made a difference. It's more expensive (maybe 80% more!), but the synthetic is supposed to last longer as well. Just make sure it's diesel rated on the API rating on the jug.

I use Rotella 40-wt and a Wix filter, I get it from my local Truck Parts to do an oil change, not sure how much it cost without looking for an invoice but I get a discount.
With the always warm to hot weather we have here in Southern California I don’t need multi viscosity oil, and the smell doesn’t bother me.

I use Case IH because Cummins made them produce a better oil. I can go to the dealer and they always have 5 gallon pails and filters. 26 quart bottles in the recycle bin after my dad and I change oil in our trucks is rediculous. Looking at getting a 55 gallon drum, but I think it would take 10 years to use it all.
