What to do with Trans cooler after PS intercooler install?
Well I'm in the process of puttin in a Powerstroke intercooler. I got some aluminum acid cleaner and washed it up and it cleaned up and shined up nice. I tore the front all apart and cut/ground the old mounts out so I'm about halfway done. I'm gonna mount it in front of the AC condensor just like in the sticky. My question is what to do with my transmission cooler? where should I mount it since it won't fit there anymore? I know some trucks had the under bed tranny coolers. Could I mount it there? and does it matter how close or far away from the tranny it is? I'm just not sure what to do with it yet... What have you guys done? or do you have any ideas?
You could install it in a different location it like some have done.
Or remove it altogether and redo your lines.
Mine has been gone for months. The lines are still there though, but there is a rubber line that makes the fluid loop back. I towed with it like that and had no ill effects. I don't tow super heavy, and I don't tow very often either.
Also, my transmission is upgraded though, I know yours is pretty much stock. I would like to redo my lines someday to clean it up a little, or at least put the trans cooler in a different spot. I also have a 3rd gen cooler, but it's not much bigger than a 1st gen cooler.

I just pulled the stock mounting brackets - pic 1
and drilled a couple of holes in the grille valance and mounted it there - pic 2
and it sits just behind the lower lip of the front bumper - pic 3...Was kind of guessing with the pic because I had the camera sitting on the ground but the front lip of the bumper is ~ 1/2" out of the pic to the left. I figure the turbulence created by the bumper will suck enough air up into the cooler to let it work - after a fashion. I'm not real concerned because the next mod will be :
pic 4 - soon to be installed under the bed 29K btu's of cooling.

When you cut the steel trans lines, is it necessary to give them a lip of some kind, and if so, how?
In the post in the sticky about installing a cooler I liked the idea of the special thread-on fittings but if I don't HAVE to do that I'd rather not.

The hose from the factory cooler to the steel lines is rubber with a clamp....
NOW - if you're talking about adding the underbed cooler - well.....
When you cut the steel lines, don't use a hacksaw use a tubing cutter and then slide compression fittings on and tighten.....
Done...
It's really not a major deal.
Well I've about got it done. I got everything cut out and it'll fit, just gotta do some welding for the bottom mounts and make some top mounts. I'm thinkin of puttin the tranny cooler right next to the intercooler on the right side(drivers side) and mounting it there vertically so it still gets some air from the grille. That is if the grille clears it when i put it back in, if not I am thinkin just under the turn signal light and cuttin a hole in the metal piece that goes across the front just like I did on the other side of it for the air scoop on the intake. Thanks for the ideas though guys. I do still have my bone stock trans and its on its way out, so I'm not too worried. I'll get a better cooler when i get a new tranny anyways.
