water pump pulley

Water pump pulley fell off. There is no key way. No snap ring. No bolt holding the pulley on. Looks to be some kind of molecular bond that was broke. It doesn't look like the pulley was welded on.

So, it would seem, the pulley on the water pump is press fit on, maybe heated and pressed on the water pump shaft?

My plan is to clean up the pulley and shaft, JB Weld (glue) it back on there. Seems cheesy, but I just have to make sure the pulley stays on there.

If anyone knows anything about this, maybe someone else's water pump pulley fell off?..... trying to avoid replacing the whole water pump. I'm in an apartment, no place to do surgery like that, severe back problems limit what I can do.... I would have to take it to a mechanic.

Any ideas, info is appreciated.

I think if it fell off that there may be more wrong with the pump, don't know if I would trust it. Changing out the pump is as simple as removing the belt, draining a little antifreeze and taking out two bolts. Should only take 20 mins, no heavy lifting required. I have done it in the parking lot of a NAPA store.

Yes. I would have take it to a mechanic, trust me.

Looks like I'm going to have to take it to a mechanic anyway. I've been out there messing around with, got limited tools. But mostly it's the back problems keeping me from working on it. My wrenching days are over.

Definitely need to replace WP. The pulley is probably friction welded on, in any case it cannot slip on the shaft or you will cook your engine.

You are forewarned though, don't get taken advantage of, book shouldn't even be an hour, and street price on even a Gates pump is 40 or so bucks, honest wrenches only upcharge 40 percent around here, so figure pump at a reputable mechanic would be right at 55-60 bucks. Add antifreeze and perhaps a hose or 2 if they look bad and you shouldn't get hammered too hard.

Where are you located? Heck, I would be happy to throw one on if I am close enough, middle Illinois here.

They are so simple I have done them with a flashlight held in my mouth, only 2 bolts and a rubber gasket.

Get one from your local auto parts and stop by a local High School Auto Shop, ask if they would install it for you?

It is such a simple task any decent person would take no money.

Where are you located?

By all means, don't let them take you for a ride.

Thank you for the offers of help, and infos. Had a shop do it. Called around, estimates varied. Ended up being 165$ for everything, labor, pump, coolant, etc. One shop had it at .3 hour in the book.

Had to get an upper radiator hose, get yours from napa. They installed a car quest, doesn't route right. Even leaks at the radiator. So picked up a napa, much better.

I was surprised how easy they are. I had gasket scrapers, 1/4 and 3/8 socket sets, the works. Ended up needing a socket, ratchet, and a magnet and fishing tool to fish the 1/4 drive ratchet out from between the condenser and radiator. Effectively doubled the time it took.

I bought a waterpump from napa that was chinese made. I noticed the other day how much of a groove there was. I rubbed my nail across the surface and there is a lip there. Anyone else have this problem?

Thinking I might get a bosh pump for the truck;

Part Number; BOSCH Part # 97083
