Small Alternator Pulley?

Anyone have any idea where I might find a smaller pulley for my alternator? The reason I ask is because I switched my Ford 4000D tractor from generator to alternator, but the 2 5/8 v-belt pulley on there is too big. This is a one wire GM alternator and doesn't start charging until I get up to about 1800 RPM. Unless I'm running the PTO, I usually don't run it that high. I figure if I can find a pulley half the size of what I have now, I can get the alternator charging at a lower RPM. I'm sure I won't overspeed it, having a red line of about 2800.
I have asked about it at the local parts store, and a rebuilder I found online, with no luck with either. Both said that's the smallet pulley. I could swear I've seen smaller ones though.

Thanks,
Chris

I can't really entertain any changes to the crank pulley. There is already tight clearance anyway there since the front end of the tractor bolts to the front of the engine, around the crank pulley (typical on old tractors, the engine IS the frame).
Thanks for the idea though.

You can wire in a inticer button to start the alt to charging when ever you want it to. It simply sends a short ground and it starts charging if needed. Goodluck,,Rick

How does that work on a single wire alt? Wouldn't you have to open up the alt to connect a wire to the field wire?
Perhaps a starter/alternator rebuilder can change the kick-in at the 750-800 range by changing the centrif weight springs or some other adjustment. Nat

On the old ford 2,8 and 9n tractors when changing over from 6 to 12 we would use the one wire alt's and under the dash or on it we would install a small push button with a wire straight to the charge wire and induce a short ground which inturns intices the alt to charge and or make the built in volt regulator read and if need charge.
