Was the head check for cracks ?
Then the heat exchanger on rt ft of eng block .
Possible that the head has bumped the gasket while assembly ?

the head was checked for cracks and the head did bump the gasket the first time but not the second. i have been told that the heat exchanger going bad would put oil into the water not vice-versa?

oil cooler leaks will put oil in your water. oil pressure is much higher than coolant system pressure.

Yes, but when the engine shuts down so does the oil pressure. The coolant is still under pressure when the engine shuts down. The coolant system runs at 15 psi once everything warms up, and it stays there until everything cools down. I'd say have a look at the oil cooler.

You check the oil cooler??

That would be my guess (assuming the head was put back on properly)

true enough, I hadn't thought about it that way. Mine went at freeway speed, so there was little to no mixing of water in my oil, just the other way around.
