What are the reasons that one would desire water injection??

Water injection cools the intake charge. Cooler intake charge=lower egts. It doesn't really add power, but since the intake charge is cooler, it's also more dense which creates a better burn. H2O injection is the poor mans intercooler, with the advantage that it's slelectable. Plus, you can drop a bit of meth in there for fun, on occasion.

Actually it works best if you drop some meth in there all the time. A small (20 - 25%) dose of methanol keeps the water from putting out the fire in the cylinders and allows you to run more volume of water/meth mix than you could have with straight water. This leads to greater EGT reductions than water alone.

I am assuming this injection takes place in the air intake between the turbo and intake manifold, right??

I have my jets on the intake horn. Yes, flip a switch and it's on.

I would think that you would have a master switch to turn the system on and then you would have a pressure switch in the manifold to only turn the pump on once you get to a certain boost pressure. You don't want to inject water at say idle or low boost. You could possibly hydrolock the engine which could be very very bad.

Right. A master switch arms the system, and the injection is triggered by a pressure switch or a controller, depending on how expensive the system is.

How big would the water/methanol reservoir need be for 1000 mile trips??

I have 92 gallon fuel capacity and often don't let my feet touch the ground until it is close to empty.

That would depend on the terrain and the type of load. If you're towing I think you ought to have close to 10 gallons available.

This isn't a system that runs constantly, most are set up to kick on between 18-25psi of boost.

I guess freezing weather would negate the feasibility of this and probably the need. Am I right??

For reference, some windshield washer fluid is very similar to a 25% meth 75% water mix. This also happens to be a good accepted daily driver/towing mix. If the washer fluid doesn't freeze, neither will the H2O-meth mixture. Running straight water, yeah, you're SOL, but as Wannadiesel said, a bit of meth is almost needed to help keep the fire lit. Some folks actually run straight washer fluid.

I run 20% ethynol in mine, mainly because methynol is hard to find and auto stores rarely carry the higher mixes of washer fluid. But i never run washer fluid, im not a fan of pouring a high detergent soap into my engine.

My system has a master switch and the primary is activated at 10 psi of boost, the boost switch can be bypassed with a selective voltage switch (tps kinda)
