water in fuel
hey guys, hows everybody? i'm an idiot and need some help.changed oil and replaced fuel filter this weekend. filter was full of black diesel, also noticed that the water sensor had sludge in it. flushed it out with water hose
and put back on filter.water in fuel .light came on,which i figured it would, and was hard to start.primed filter with 5w30 motor oil .removed sensor and cleaned with chain saw gas, replaced and primed pump i think manually.hard to start next morning that is why i think i may have forgot to prime.anyway truck still has water light on,runs and starts fine now after a few miles of driving.i am wondering if the light is a false positive for water.can if anybody enlighten me
TIA

It was hard to start because you primed the filter with motor oil. Don't do that, use diesel fuel or a fuel additive like Power Service.
It's easy to get the probe in there such that it's hitting the spring in the filter and shorting out. If draining the filter doesn't produce some water, then the spring is your problem.

Due to the vast percentage of fuel that is cycled through the return-line system, the oil gets diluted quickly; also, these things will start and run forever on plain old vegetable oil, which is as thick, if not thicker, than engine-oil.

Because 1st gens will run just fine on straight motor oil. I've done it. I ran out one night late where there were no stations. Ran it till it quit. I had some oil with me and poured in about 2 gallons. It ran just the same as ever.

That black diesel was probably algae growth that was shocked from additive in your tank from present water. When the algae gets shocked, it dies and gets sucked to the filter in the tank. Better drop it and check it also.
Its your engine, but why would you want to fill the filter with something so much thicker than fuel or additive?
Its a paper element in the engine filter. Very diffucult to pull such a thick substance through it. That engine would cost about 5k, give or take 1k to rebuild if your experiment goes wrong. In an emergency, you have to do what you have to do. The pump will tear itself apart trying to pull fuel if it cant get it willingly form the lift pump. That alone is $800 to rebuild and $400 to pull it off and reinstall. The injectors are cooled by fuel, if its not present, your upper cylinders are also taking a beating. Vegatable oil has to be preheated to run right or it is too thick. Just something to think about.
