VE Pump Timing
OK, no one laugh or slam me too hard. I pulled my VE pump in plans to install a P-Pump but things have changed. When I pulled it I was not concerned with putting the engine on tdc #1 because I would do that with the P-Pump install. Well now I want to reinstall the VE and need to figure out how to put the pump to #1tdc becasue I moved the engine to #1 tdc in preparation for the P-Pump swap. I know

The pump can only go back on one way. There is a woodruff key in the pump shaft, just make sure the key goes back into the slot in the gear when the pump is put back on.
Also make sure the pump shaft and gear mating surfaces are nice and clean before install.

IIRC from my Cummins shop manual (same as the "Diesel Supplement" with the FSM), the woodruff key should be around the 5 o'clock position when the pump is firing at #1. There should also be a mark on the pump itself indicating firing at #1. Just line up the key with the mark. Of course, be sure the engine is as TDC as well. That should put the notch in the pump gear near the same position. Use the TDC timing pin on the backside of the timing case (just below where the pump would sit) to locate TDC. Just don't forget to pull it back out before turning the motor over

Shanks guys. Man was I shakin like a dog pooping peach pits!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am assuming that its 5 o'clock as viewed from the rear cause with the pin in for timing looking from the front the notch is about 630 700 o'clock>

did you put the engine at TDC or were you just lining up the notch with the woodruff key? the book says:
"At the point of injection the key way of the shaft will align with the delivery valve receiving the injection and the illustrated hash mark on the seal housing. NOTE: The illustrated mark is for reference only and should not be used for setting pump timing."
If you're looking at the back of the pump, the bottom left delivery valve is #1. So, when the key way is at the 5 o'clock position, the pump is injecting into #1.
You did what the others said which was to just line up the notch and the key and bolt it up. Run it, it shouldn't be an issue. I'm just giving info from the book.
