No, you don't need to remove the linkage. Just back the low idle speed screw (the one that's right up by the cylinder head, real hard to get to) off until it idles right. It's actually easiest to grind/cut about 1/4" off the screw and then run it in further to get the idle right. Just make sure you get the locknut loose before you start cutting. Bend a 10mm box end wrench 90 degrees so you can get on the nut from the front of the engine, then use vise grips on the wrench to get leverage.

I have allso built one of the wrenches that "dave" just describe and it work vary good!!
the box end of my cheap wrench was vary large and had to grind some off the side of it, so i could get a another bite to tighten it back up!
vary simple to do!

on the truck i just did, i have to pop one end of the linkage off and set the idle, because the throttle rod wasn't adjusted long enough, after setting the correct idle, i lengthened the rod. if you don't want to go through the trouble of bending the wrench, i've actually just used a screwdriver and hammer and tapped the nut loose. shot some PB blaster in there first. go nice and easy and you won't hurt the nut at all. also if you are going to just back it out the PB blaster dissolved the paint on the screw so it wouldn't bind up. spray it down and brush it off as good as you can. then back it out like you are tapping a hole, (1/2 turn out 1/4 turn back) and keep cleaning off the dirt/grime/ and paint that are on the idle screw, have fun, it's not that bad!
