Turbo rebuild cost

Just curious to know what's involved - parts, special tools, knowledge, etc. - in rebuilding a turbo, say a HX35 with side play.
Been quoted $450 to 750 if no electronics, up to $1,500 (sic) if electronics involved in the repair. What is y'all's input on this?

Its not that hard to rebuild one you just gotta have torque specs and possibly a way to get it balanced, You'd need a turbo shop to get it balanced.

Side play is normal, as long as the wheels don't touch the housing.

But ~$400 is what it cost including a new compressor wheel and housing as it went long enough to rub. That was a few years back also.

It is not that hard really. Amazingly easy for what it does.

A small pair of snap ring pliers is required, and a in/lb torque wrench that reads both ways. They is a good writeup in the sticky.

You can get a real Holset rebuild kit from GDS for around $70. HX35/40 and H1 have different kits, but cost basically the same.
If you rebuild it before the wheels rub, you can do it yourself real easy, just mark the compressor wheel to the shaft. If you have to replace a wheel you should have it balanced for maximum reliability. However, I put a GDS 60mm on myself and drove it for 1-1/2 years with plenty of abuse and no problems.

You can get the rebuild manual here:
http://www.holset.co.uk/mainsite/fil...literature.php

You will need the service data sheet for the clearances and specs.

I might try and rebuild my hy someday. I think the bearings are just gone in it, the fins were rubbing against the edge, and it damaged about 4 of the fins, but i think i could still run it fine if i cleaned it up and put new bearings in it, I could maybe put a new shaft with the blades on it in though, I don't know, If i ever buy another truck and i need to upgrade the turbo, I will rebuild this hy and put it on that truck
