turbo help

Hi all; have some turbo questions at a local diesel shop repair /salvage yard there are some old turbos and blown/wornout motors with turbos etc now some of these are or look like the little ones we use. The owner allso bombs his shop trucks big time so may be some hx 35or 40 around....... questions 1/ where do i look for housing size or measure. 2/ assuming mine is stock which hosing would be best[slight mods in future]. 3/ if i find a 2nd gen hx35or larger will it work and 4/ how will diff turbos and /or housing affect truck thanks Eric

Well, i can help with a few of these...

1. Housing size should be stamped on the housing near where it is attached to the manifold.

2. A 16 cm housing is popular. Also, a 14 cm wastegated housing has worked well for several people, but costs big $.

3. An HX35 would work very well for mild mods. And if you can get one cheap, get me one too . An HX40 might be too big if you are only planning on slight mods.

4. Small housings tend to make the turbo spool faster, but they also tend to get toasty at high RPMs. Big housings are very laggy. A 16cm would be good, but an HX35 with the stock 12cm wastegated housing would also work well for small mods.

Only thing i can add is with a gated housing your exhaust needs to be moved, and if you run an auto the 12 housing is ok, but dont take an hy-35.

I wouldn't say no to a free HY-35 - as long as I had no plans that included bigger injectors.

Whats the deal with the HY35? How does it compare to a HX35?

The hy has a 9cm exhaust housing vs the 12 cm on the hx. The hy came on later 24v autos....prolly to help the slushbox feel less, well, slush-ish from the get go. Don't know much about em beyond that.

edit: the compressor housing is most likely different as well. I've heard of a few 1st genners running them in the high altitude with some success.

The hy was put on auto's as an emmision control, it doesnt move as much air as a hx. but if your mods are light it be great, it just cant take higher rpms.
