Which turbo

S-200 & BHT3C twins, HX-40, HX-35, or somekind of hybrid from HTT. Its a daily driver and i will be 3 hours from home at college for the next 4 years, so reliability is important. I already need a new exhaust so that won't be a problem (stacks R.I.P.).

I figure a rebuild will be needed on the used junkjard turbos.

Can anyone give me some advide on the rebuild cost, what I should pay for used turbos.

Which will be the most cost effective.

You don't have the fuel for anything more than a hybrid. An HX-35 would work OK, too - just not as much air at the top end.

$300 would be top dollar for a used HX-35.

HTT can tell you about rebuild costs and sell you whatever parts you might need.

What's got you thinking you need a fresh turbo (other thna the EGT's)?

I like Driving the mill/mountains of PA and the EGT's concern me. The old H1C isn't making anymore power for me either. And since i alreadyneed a new exhaustbetter to have te right BP for the turbo.

I think a stock HX-35 will do fine, as would an HTT upgrade and a smaller exhaust housing.

Wow, HTT's prices have went up. Guess this diesel performance stuff just keeps getting bigger and bigger, as does the prices... supply and demand I guess.

What exhaust housing do you have now? I'd get the cheaper HTT upgrade compressor housing and keep your stock exhaust housing. That 14cm wg housing adds alot to the price.

I'll get on the 'upgrade what you've got' bandwagon. I've got terrain around here that's similar to what you're descrtibing and with a smaller exhaust housing (12cm) and bigger compressor (HTT stageIII) I'm able to pull the steeper grades on secondary highways in 5th without problems...and that's without an intercooler. For instance, I can roll into the throttle pretty abruptly at 55mph on a 6% grade and the pyro runs to 900 and just hangs there while the speedo passes 75mph. With the stock H1C, I'd be pushing 1200+ before 65. Best 200 bucks I've spent on the rig (HTT housing)

so for under $400 I just change out everything but the cartridge. They guy at htt said that wh1c's (and holsets for that matter) are inefficient after 30-35 PSI

That's pretty much the case, but 30 psi with a stock compressor VS 30psi with an upgrade are two very different things

What about waste-gating and what size turbin housing shoud i get, I wasthinking i shoud get a wast gate but I'm not sure. And is this a one time thing so when i go to upgrade the turbo next time, i have to shell out $1500 for the HTB2.

I can get the parts a little cheaper from a HTT dealer via internet, should i do that or go through them

12 and 14cm housings are available with wastegates and, when bombing a Cummins, the non-wastegated versions of the prior really aren't an option IMO. The 12cm W/G housing was the stock housing on all p-pumped 2nd gens, and some 24v engines, so they are somewhat plentiful. You can buy one brand new, but I think you'll spend over 100 bucks. I got mine used with an aftermarket wastegate controller for 75 bucks. A stock controller will work fine...maybe better, I'm still on the fence about that. As far as the 'one time thing', well, it really depends on how you like your trucks performance after the mods. It seems everybody goes through pretty much the same 'stages' of bombing, and we all end up wanting more. A hybrid/modified version of your current turbo (ie bigger compressor, different hot side) will support, give or take, about 325-350 horse at the rear wheels...for a play truck/daily driver. Don't try and use those ponies when towing or you'll melt 'er down for sure. If you're looking for bigger numbers, an entirely different turbo will have to be in the mix, along with some custom injectors. If you know 400+ is your goal and you've got the $$ to spend, get some custom sticks made and and some flavor of the HTB from HTT and let 'er rip

I will probably be towing once every couple of months, I guess I just need to keep my foot out of it?

Anyone have a waste gated trubo housing, I missed a 14cm w/g on ebay for $20, oops

Be careful when shopping for housings. Just because it's a 14cm unit, doesn't mean it will bolt up to an HX-35 or H1C...could be for a completely different turbo. I only say that because the 14's that fit our turbos seem to be made of gold and thus bring at least a few hundred dollars on e-pay, if not more.

As for keeping your foot out of it, well, that's about the size of it. Some folks don't like to watch the gauges, but I don't mind. Folks with newer trucks tow on setting 2 and play on setting 9 and all this nonsense....I just modulate my right foot for the given conditons and it's worked well (not that I could have any 'settings' like a 24v anyway, just a little jab fellas) I've yanked 12k up a 5% grade @60 in 4th running 900 pre turbo with a LOT of pedal to go....just not much more I could use, hehe. Drop the trailer and bury the loud pedal in 4th and I can see 1400 in about 5 seconds. Same truck, same tune, same day, different driving attitude. A well0tuned 1st gen is like the Leatherman Wave multi-tool---it doesn't do any one chore perfectly, but it will handle anything you throw at it and keep coming back for more 413,000 and counting on mine....
