First off, sorry if this has been covered but Ive searched for a couple weeks and haven't really found an answer to my issue.

Background:
I was driving my truck to work a couple weeks back when she just shut off on the freeway. I coasted to the side of the freeway. Tried to start it, it would crank and spew white smoke but not run. I exit the vehicle, only to find fuel pouring out from under my truck. I have the truck towed home and discover the plate on the backside of the pump is just hanging there and that’s where my fuel is spewing from.

My dad, who is pretty mechanically inclined and has taken the pump out of my truck to re seal it before, pulled the pump out to inspect it. I damaged the piston that sits behind that cover. I had another pump from a parts truck that we were able to use the piston out of it, and got the pump back together.

We bled all the lines and there is fuel at the injectors. The truck will not run unless on full throttle and even then it barley idles. It seems like a timing issue but we can’t seem to figure it out.

Any help would be appreciated to solving the issue. Also sorry for the long post. I was just trying to cover everything. The Truck is all stock.

when you say it will only run under full throttle, does it run high r's or does it run slow but you need to keep the gas punched to keep it running?

 

Double check your throttle indexing.

Any smoke while running and what color?

 

confederateson - it runs on full throttle but at low rpms. It barely idles.

wannadiesel - no smoke comes out. and ill check the throttle index

Wanna is right on the money, mine did the same thing when i replaced my pump. I readjusted throttle index and that took care of it!

My dad adjusted the throttle index and the truck is still doing the same thing. Any other suggestions?

 

How much did he move it? Did he try just one position or several?

Any smoke yet and what color?

 

Apparently he had wrote down the position of the screw, relative to the slash marks on the pump, before he took the pump apart. He set it back to where it was at originally. There is also some white smoke.

 

I would try one notch tighter.

Also make sure the timing is not retarded.

 

My dad was thinking about what else could possibly be wrong with the pump. He remembered he had used some white lithium based grease to hold a couple of the springs in place when putting the pump back together. He took it back apart cleaned the grease out and used patroleum jelly to hold the springs in place. Low and behold she fired right up after we got the pump in and bled all the lines.

Maybe it was just coincidence but could the white grease have plugged up the pump? He left all the settings the same on the pump and all he did was clean that little bit of grease out.
