I would drive it around to burn up some of the 3/4 tank of fuel or pull the bed.
Pulling [and installing] a pretty full fuel tank in a lame job.
Draining it into fuel jugs would require several jugs on hand.

you might be able to get enough access to the tank sender by removing the bed bolts and just lift the fwd end of the bed up about 12" or so.

Check your tank straps for corrosion while you are in there.

Thanks everyone again for the responses:

This fuel issue is killing me: Ok today I was able to do what Jim5870 suggested. I was able to lift the driver side of the bed. I replaced the fuel line and fittings. I upgraded them to 3/8 inch.

If anyone is interested the two plastic quick connects are also 3/8 metal. I remove the old line and replaced it with a new plastic line.

And of course the truck did the same the thing - ran for about 5/10 minutes and died. Full of air.

So I am going to remove fully the bed. The tank has way to much fuel in it.

Should I just replace the full-straw/gauge assembly? Is there any trouble-shooting I can do on the unit? Or should I be looking for an after market solution to the problem?

Thanks again for the help and sorry for the delay.

cheers
Doug

I will follow up with some pictures and what I did to correct my issues.

I ended up installing a Bean Diesel sump and upgrading the fuel lines to 1/2. Still running a stock lift pump.

cheers

I am interested in how the sump worked out for you.
Glad you got the problem fixed.

Ok sorry for the delay in responding -

My fuel issues have been corrected. It appeared the problem was in the fuel sending unit in the tank. I replaced all the plastic lines and fittings. This did not fix my problem. It appeared the previous owner replaced the fuel gauge unit. I found the rubber washer floating in the tank.

I did a ton of research and ended up going with a sump. I also did a ton of research and ended up going with the unit from Beans Diesel. There is a video of someone hitting the unit with a hammer. The install was very simple.

I installed the unit in the lowest part of the tank. I ran new lines to the lift pump. I also did a couple of tests with a few gallons of fuel to make sure it would not run dry if the truck was on grade. It appears it would not.

I did remove the bed. However, if all you are doing is installing the sump this is not necessary. You also do not need to drop the tank.

I will upload a few more pictures.

Also the sticky post about the "Big Fuel Line" upgrade was extremely helpful.

My thanks to the person who posted the information.

cheers
