tranny problems

Havin tranny problems on the '90, sometimes the gearshift comes out of the shifting mechanisim in the tranny and is stuck in whatever gear i was in. Its a quick fix to get back on the road, basically just pop off the shifter boot, pull the snap ring on top and screws on side of housing, then using screwdriver pop trans back into neutral and reassemble. Needless to say im getting good at that, but im wondering is there a way to permenantly fix w/o a new tranny? Today it got stuck in 4th at a stoplight with a trailer on, can you say stinky clutch? Any suggestions?

Thanks,luke

Sounds like something is warn , like the plastic on the shift forks , and does not go completely in gear , If you can just take the cover off you may find some warn parts that will straighten it all out , do not know if that yr/mdl you can pull the top cover without pulling trans, it could be that moving the carpet out of the way and see a pannel of the floor that will unbolt and alow you to do this without removing trans.

Could be a simple problem like deteriorated lubricant. But, more than likely the top cover of the trans has issues. Probably the detent ***** on the shift rails are jamming (flat spots). I've also occasionally seen worn hydraulic clutch components have the same effect (difficult shifting).

To work on the getrag you have to pull it out, there is no access cover in the floor
