IF you are going from a 1st gen auto, 727 or A-518 to a Getrag you do not need to swap out the adapter plate or starter.

If you are going from either 1st gen auto to a NV-4500 manual, you will need the thicker 2nd gen adapter plate and starter... Unless you use a custom A.A. bell housing and a few Getrag parts, the clutch fork being the hardest too find. Not what I would recommend.

My 6BT had a manual adapter plate. When I bolted up the A518 the plate was too deep (flex plate too far away from the torque converter). I ordered the thinner plate from a seller on eBay and all was good. The starter was the same, yes.

No, your engine had a 2nd gen or later adapter plate, and you swapped to a 1st gen adapter. The manual and automatic transmissions from the same "generations" used the same adapter plates, as Ollie stated above.

Thanks Alec.

I was thinking about giving up on trying to add good advise to this thread.

I also couldn't instantly bring myself to add that a 1st gen starters and a 2nd gen starters are NOT the same.
I have a 1st gen starter sitting on my work table as NJTman wants a spare to rebuild, that I am sending him.

Trust me, 66fora69, I have owned a few 1st and 2nd gen Cummins trucks over the years.

How do you think that starter will engage the flywheel or flex plate when it is swapped to a much thicker or thinner adapter plate and has a different distance to travel to do its job?
