Towing power

Now that I have tried out my truck towing. I would like to add a little more power to it 75 to 100 horse I feel will do nicely. It's got a 93 motor with a 518 in it. I think I'll put a converter in it this spring. So what should I do to engine? The powertrain is all stock. I bought the 3200 spring for it but haven't put it in yet. What else is there to do? I'm not looking to race the thing just tow better and not wreck anything.

A convertor will give you 50-75 more HP to the wheels. Beyond that, get some gauges- pyro, boost, trans temp, and fuel pressure.

Some 190 injectors will give you a nice kick in the seat. ALso, tune the pump/ bump timing, 16cm housing, and 4" exhaust will go a long way.

If you want 75-100 now, you'll want 100-150 by the time it's all done.

Look in the sticky, scroll down to the PERFORMANCE section. all the details and info is in there you will need for performance upgrades.

You NEED gauges, first thing on the list

Pyro 1500 degrees
Boost 60 PSI (for future upgrades)
TRANS TEMPERATURE! (when towing and playing )
If you do enough fuel mods you may need a fuel press. gauge, there cheap

Get that spring in (info in sticky) and do the little tweaks listed in the "Sticky".

Have fun

well I got the guages and I'll put the spring in on saturday and see how that works. I didn't really want to get into injectors or turbos maybe I'll just scale back my expectations a bit.

If you want to actually use the power for towing, you don't want more than stock injectors. At least not without a bigger turbo. The radiator is the limiting towing factor in summer anyway. I've got my truck set up for maximum towing capacity with the stock turbo and injectors. It will still push EGT to dangerous levels pulling a load up long grades with the fuel screw 2 turns "off" the bottom.

Maybe my VE is unusually strong, but I think there's more than enough fuel in the stock injectors for towing. Go for air flow mods: Intake, exhaust, compressor upgrade.

what he said^^^. also a tighter torque converter will make a big difference.

Yes thats the type of things I would like to do.

I read in the performance sticky about changing the timing but didn't quite get it. The rest of the pump mods look easy enough. Add the spring turn up the power screw. How about the star wheel and the fuel pin should I bother to adjust either? Or is it worth it for me? It looks like the stock sized down pipe off the turbo, should I up size it? if so how big?

I am with ACE on the stock injectors, etc.

My engine is stock non-I/C with the only mod being a piston-lift-pump and the main fuel-screw cranked a little; the "big line kit", actually two of them, is there more for convenience than power.

I probably tow as heavy, if not heavier, than most and I can twist the neck out of a trailer if I want to.

EGTs are my limiting factor and I glue my eyes to the pyro on a grade.

I had the screw turned in 1-1/2 turns deeper than it is now and it was WICKED, plumb scary, like in I could break traction in fourth gear without meaning to; but, alas, I couldn't begin to manage the EGT, hence the screw being backed out to a more manageable level.

There is as much difference in towing with a Getrag and an automatic as between daylight and dark.

gauges, 16cm exhaust housing, get that 366 spring in it, and a stans 4 inch, get a tq if you have the cash ...turn in the full fuel screw till you get smoke @ half trottle from a dead stop and you can tow heavy in the mountains and not burn your Rig up...
