hey, so im wondering if theres any issue running a turbo with a substantially smaller exhaust side than the stock holset h1c?

also, is running twins on stock injectors a bad idea or is it really not bad to run super lean in a diesel? im planning 5x012s for my build but already have the turbos for it

I have a few general questions regarding a build im doing centered around a 1st gen cummins engine.

1: How wide is the block where the engine mounts are? I found an engine in a bread truck but need this measurement before i pull it for the project. A rough measurement gave me about 12-13" but i need something more precise for the motor mounts im making.

2: Project is going to be 2WD. Does a 2nd gen flywheel/clutch bolt up to a 1st gen crank?

3: I'm going manual trans. The NV4500 is what im going for, any worries there? The engine i found is mated to a 727 which would be horrible for me. Does the bellhousing match the block of a 1st gen? Will I need anything different, (starter?)

4: I have access to a VE pumped engine and i found fuel pump mods to give me enough power to make me happy for a long time. I also found a P7100 pump on a ford 7.8 sitting in the same yard I can get for $200. it's bolted to the passenger side of the engine though, Any issues there or is it capable of mounting on both sides? Could I remove the timing gear with a 3 jaw puller or does it need heat?

5: I could buy it if i wanted to swap pumps in the future, knowing i'd need the timing gear (which is in the 7.8 I believe) a timing cover and some other things. But I also found out the head casting for the injectors is smaller in the 1st gen than 2nd gen? Would that limit the injectors I could use in the future or are there adapters to run 2nd gen aftermarket injectors on 1st gen heads?

6: what is required to run the starter on 12 volts instead of the 24 volts? if anything?

7: When considering upgrades in the future, (after all gauges installed of course ) it's better to increase airflow before fuel, correct?
OK will try and answer some of your questions....

If going with a NV4500 you are best to use all 2nd Gen stuff. You will need a 2nd Gen starter, engine plate, bell housing, clutch hydro's, pressure plate bolts up fine to a 1st Gen crank.

I am not sure of the timing gear, cover and P7100 set-up for the passenger side set-up. There is a bunch of stuff required to swap out a VE for a P-pump.....I would personally just max out your VE before I would mess with a P-pump conversion.....you will most likely be more then happy with a well thought out set of mods to your VE motor.

Starters in 1st and 2nd Gen's are 12V.

After gauges you can go with a BHAF or stock type filter in a free flowing housing. I am not a fan of oil/cloth filters like K&N's and will never run one of them since they allow a lot of debris through. a 4" exhaust will help move air away from the motor as well.

You didn't say what year your motor was? Is it an IC or Npn-IC motor? That will affect the advice on turbo's. But a HX35 is a cheap and easy swap for 1st Gen motors, and will work well with the NV4500. You can also swap a HE351 on there as another option.

Hey, Raziel, just curious. Which 2wd chassis are you placing this engine into? While the engines all out in the open, add to your check off list the freeze plugs. Cummins makes those out of stainless material these days. I'd change them out just because these engines are getting up here in age.

That looks like an industrial motor to me....out of a piece of equipment, or "maybe" a bus...but doubt it. Not sure what's going on with that crank assembly? Hope that is a bolted on piece, and not cast into the actual crank.

I am with you... The rear of that crank looks pretty strange in comparison to the Dodge Cummins 12Vs I see.

That's a spacer used on the rear of the crankshaft. It's quite common with the Allison autos that were used behind the b series. It is removable and you then have the same crank flange that's used with chryslers version of the 5.9.

I was laughing at Fusion's comment, and I recalled it was from that movie "Waterboy".

It truly looks like that young kid is fixing to try and rig up a ****** or something to try and move that heavy a$$ engine. It hurts me to just think about it.
