Tie rod removal?
Tie rod removal?
Hi all, I have a passenger side tie rod that's pretty well worn out. I decided to pull it. Yanked the tie rod out of the hub, but that's where I'm stuck. It won't turn out of the bar.
Manual says to just turn it out, but I'm guessing it's been in there a while and I've tried everything from heat, oil and yet a bigger bar to get that thing out.
I noticed there is a grove that runs the length of the threads. Is there some sort of tool I could pry that apart with and maybe that would help things?
OR...is this the point you just give up and get two new tie rods and a center bar?!
Any ideas?
Thanks

I just recently redid the front end on my donor 93...and the tie rods were in there good! Eventually I had to clamp the tie rod in the vice and then use a pipe wrench to spin the bar. Even then it took a lot of heat and PB Blaster to get them out.
I too would love a replacement bar...since the threads were so rusty on the old tie rods that it deformed the thread pattern coming out, and now the new ones are very tuff to spin in and out.
Here's a pic of what I had to do....

A very simple, yet time consuming way of releasing those tie rod ends is to buy a gallon of "rust converter", which is simply a light acid that can be purchased at any paint store, and let it sit overnight in the solution. You would have to take the bar and ends off the truck to be able to stand it or suspend it in the solution overnight.
The rust converter will enter the threads and dissolve any gunk in there, releasing the TRE.
I use this stuff all the time.

But there are many different phosphoric acid products out there that will do the same job.

Thanks for the replies. I think either way the bar is going to have to be removed to get the one out. Might as well just do both well I'm at it.
I thought about standing one end up at a time in some sort of miracle solution overnight. What kind of rust converter are you using or is this just a general term for something every store has?
Thanks
