Stud Choices

I'm getting ready to spend the coin for the big HP, one item on the shopping list is obviously studs. I see standard ARP's, high tensile ARP's, ATS studs, A1 studs, and A1-HD H11 studs. prices go from 400ish to 800ish.
I've heard debates about grinding valve covers for ARPS vs A1's, whats the story with that?
I plan on running a 62mm s300 single, so i think i can skip the high tensile stuff.

Thanks

I think just a set of standard ARPs would be fine. Check out BBD diesel they seem to have the best deal i could find.

I was just reading something on compD about studs breaking. It sounded like it was happening a lot.

I've never heard about the ATS's until my google search tonight. anybody know anything about them?

does the breaking have to do with not bottom tapping properly?

My friend got ATS ones for his 24 valve, he said he wasn't sure what brand they were but he said it didn't have ATS's name on them. Said it came with ARP lube though. I'm guessin they were A1s but not sure.

the two things i've heard about grinding are:
A) grid a bit out of the inside of the valve cover
B) grind the rockers

one of these options sounds easier than the other, but which goes with which brand of studs?

grinding of rockers is ARPs and grinding the Valve cover webbing is with the A1's.

If I ever feel the need for studs I'm going to get A1. I've seen broken ARP's on CompD several times. That and the fact that ARP calls for machining the rockers (NOT grinding) makes that an easy decision for me. And BC847 runs A1's

I know with ARP's you're supposed to machine the rocker pedestals. They mention that and give specs in their install instructions which are available on the website.

I've heard nothing but good about Haisley's A1's and H11's though.

ARP's were a fairly easy choice for me. Cheaper, come with bolts for the rocker pedestals, arp makes 99% of the professional racing hardware and machining rockers is free when you can do it yourself.

I bet most failures are because of installation problems (aka people are stupid). There are a lot of sets of ARP's out there compared to a1's so its hard to compare that. Ive seen failures on a1's in drag racing so its not like either of them have perfect track records.

Whatever you do, bottom tap!

your set up looks pretty close to what i'm aiming for. did you get your 5x16's from SDX? hows the 12 cm housing with those sticks?

I found A1's for $460
can anybody beat that?

no i got them from lee jesse. i cant say much about the 12cm housing, i dont have a drive pressure gauge. it spools like nobodys business.

i dont want to look like "the arp guy" but you can get arps for 400 and spend 60 dollars machining the pedestals. i think its a catch 22 either way.
