Striped the center out of the clutch disk, How long till transfer case coupler goes?

I was accelerating in fourth yesterday going to lunch with an empty 28' flatbed trailer on the truck when she stopped pulling and started making noise. I was sure I had striped the center out of the clutch disk.

Today I pulled the trans and looked at the clutch, it looked ok with no mettle laying around like most times I have found striped clutches. I closely inspected it and came to the conclusion that the clutch must be alright.

I next split the trans from the transfer case, the coupler splines on the transfer case don't look all that great, how long do they go, and has anyone ever trashed a set?

I worked and scratched my head for a while longer before I grabbed an old pilot shaft and put the clutch threw it and stuck the pair in the vice, I then gave the clutch disk a twist and found out it was trashed inside.

I will take the clutch back to Unique Automotive in Jonesburg Mo Wednesday as it has a warrantee on it. I should replace the 1-2 shift fork as it has some ware, and the shifter has felt like it could go in between sometime soon if not careful. Where is a good place to order it from? Thanks and sorry for the long post. Jon

If it is the "upgraded" stock replacement 12" clutch, then ya. The clutch is just junk. You need the stock Sachs 13" or better (meaning 13", NOT 12").

Stock turbo and pump settings? Sounds like a 12" 'er to me.

What he said The list of clutches better than the stocker that are also cheaper than 1500 bucks can be counted on one hand...

The t-case coupler is, according to Dan at quad 4x4, the stoutest to be mated with a 205. The 205 behind the Getrag is also one of, if not the strongest, itteration of that unit. You've gotta have some serious HP or drive like a total wingnut to break that combo.

When i was chasing a clunk noise, and realise there was a coupler in there, i ordered it and replaced it(remembering how the GM Version of theses held up in gassers)

It was like new with 200,000 miles on it. previous owner and original owner us the truck for pulling his varion camping trailers.
so this couple has had a good work out.

Replace it any was as i had already bought it.........No didnt fix or change the clunk..

get a factory Sachs 13" clutch in it, and be happy.

Flash.

Yup. I tore the center out of a 12" Con-O in a little less than 2 years just driving around empty. Never slipped, just broke.

I know this a little off subject but...

Does a 12" and 13" use the same flywheel?

Ok, then why do you get a new flywheel with the SB 13" clutches? Is it for the upgraded pilot bearing?

Yes, the bearing won't fit in the stocker.

Thanks. We are trying to put a nv4500 in my bro's pickup. It has the 1-3/8 input shaft, so he got a clutch setup out of a newer Dodge. It was an '04 I believe. The flywheel hits the starter before it draws up to the crank flange. Do the HPCR engines use a different offset flywheel, or do you have to space the stater out? Can we get a flywheel of a older 12 or 24 valve and put the newer clutch on it?

I think the new trucks have a dual mass flywheel. I don't know if the new clutch will fit the old flywheel.

South Bend includes an aluminum spacer for the starter that is .583" thick with their new flywheel/clutch combo. It spaces the starter back, or toward the radiator. Might be waht you are looking for.
A thick motorplate, large bendix starter and bellhousing & fork for the 4500 used with the 3rd gen flywheel (12.25"? I think) If you have a donor vehicle.

The flywheel is solid, it is supposed to be out of an '04. Thought maybe an 3rd gen starter would fit, but its basically the same. So I guess we need a starter spacer, or an older flywheel.

I just blew one of the dampening springs out of my 13" Con OFE, put it right into the area between the flywheel and the disc. Peter took good care of me, got her all fixed up and back together.

Thanks for the info, I did some research and found the spacer. The spacer is Cummins p/n 3949583 and the bolts are Cummins p/n 3946085. Have to get one of these.
