Stiff Accelerator Pedal

I have an 89 W250 3-speed. I gave up on trying to get performance out of it. I currently have a K&N air filter & 3" Flowmaster exhaust. I also have a marine alternator tach that works great. This is not my regular vehicle. It is my boat puller. I can leave it at the ramp overnight & nobody would want to steal it. The transmission is a real slush box. I had it rebuilt & replaced a cracked flex plate before it grenades. The one thing thing that bugged me the most was the stiff throttle pedal. I pulled off the boot over the return spring for the trans kick-down linkage & removed the spring. I replaced it with a much lighter spring that attaches to the linkage on the injection pump. I then fortified the main throttle return spring. The end result is that the throttle pedal is light & comfortable, but the throttle does not return right away. There is a bit of run-on. I just got used to it. Has anyone else found a fix for the stiff throttle pedal on the early automatics? The trans kickdown return spring is definitly the culprit.

the geometry of the 89-90 set ups is also different than the 91-93. They require more pedal effort, and seem to require more pedal travel in normal driving.

Steve, I read your other post too. Make sure you take up all the slack in your throttle cable, you'll probably have to do thius at the pedal side. Then readjust the linkage so you get all the slop out there, but get the best travel. Make sure it cantacts the stopper, when it returns so it doesn't put stress on the pump shaft. You should be at a comfortable cruise at 60-65, and top out at 80. It' doesn't sound like your getting a full pull of the throttle. Originally, my pedal was at the floor, with a good ways to go. After the adjustment, if you want a reason to get a new tranny, turn your fuel screw up, you'll be happy with that engine. If your truck hasn't been getting full throttle for some time, you probably have a lot of life left in it.

there is a service bulletin on this a long time ago some parts are available. It sounds like you did what was suppose to be done but there is a new kickdown cable involved . I performed the fix on my truck also replaced throttle cable and it worked fine but some times the throttle is hard to push just like there is no power. Does your truck not want to move unless you push the pedal through the floor?

Thank you very much for the info. I will check with the dealer about a possible "propper fix" for the problem as I get some run-on after letting off the throtttle the way it is now. As for the accelleration, ever since I put the K&N air filter in & the 3" Flowmaster exhaust pipe, the truck accellerates really well if it is warmed up. When I first got the truck, I was completely disgusted with the way it drove & wanted to get rid of it & buy another 6.2 Chevy. My old 6.2 was like a bat outa hell until I'd put the boat behind it. Now, I actually like my Dodge.

hello, I found the copy of the bulletin you could find it at http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1990/14-02-90.htm I think. The only thing available at the time I bought the stuff was the cable and springs
