Steering Scare!

Today I was driving, entering an on-ramp and went to make a right hand turn and the steering wheel did NOT want to turn. Forcibly, I pulled it to the right and felt a snap. Could this be a sign to change the steering column? Borgeson? Others? Have any of you had this happen to you? Needless to say, I nearly soiled my britches! Not a great sensation to have while entering a highway.

Happened to me a couple of times...no idea what it is/was. Hasn't happened since and everything has been fine. going to replace all the bushings on the steering system though 'cause it felt like something might be binding up. I'm sure more will chime in

Intermittent steering. Wow. I'd think that would be one of the less popular dealer-installed options.

I replaced my steering shaft 2 Decembers ago and on the way back to school I lost my steering as well, what happened was when I installed the borgeson shaft I messed up the seal on the steering box. Halfway to school 225 miles from home and 225 miles from school it blew all the power steering fluid out, I had to leave it at a shop in Richmond KY and pick it up a few days later. $600+ dollars later I had a new steering box. Needless to say my truck drives better than it ever would have new now.

Check the plate that connects the steering box to the frame. They crack disturbingly often.

I bet it's the clockspring coming apart.

Horn work? If you have cruise, does it still work?

Also if you have a standard/non-tilt steering column, there's a bearing in the shaft that can lock up or get worn and cause this. Happened to me once. I had a spare column laying around, I used the bearing out of it. Not sure where to get a new one, maybe a dealer or match it up at a bearing shop.
