Steering Problem

I had a leaking power steering unit, so I changed it with one that was working on another truck that I took apart.
When the front end was up in the air I filled the power steering pump and turned the steering wheel all the way to the right and left, but the fluid level did not go down.
Lowered the truck and found I could not turn the steering wheel either to the right or left.
Could the pump be air bound?

One cycle, left and right? Jack it back up, and try again. The engine needs to be revved up to 1200 rpm or so, while cycling the steering wheel.

Do not let the ps fluid run dry while doing this. A partner filling it up works best

Have to disagree with T-man on this one.....From my hydroboost thread....

Here's What I did,
- fill the reservoir, then remove the power to the FSS and crank the motor for about 10-15 sec, then check the fluid again.
- Then I fired it up for about 10-15 seconds, shut it off and check fluid again.
- Then fired it up again and this time turned lock to lock with wheels off the ground. Took quite a while to finally get hyd pressure through the system.

It was during this air lock situation that I think the pump burned up the seals.

Now after my research I came across a few references to this procedure.

-fill the reservoir with fresh fluid. DO NOT START THE MOTOR! Then with wheels off the ground "slowly" crank the wheels lock to lock (LH and RH). Then check fluid level.
-Continue lock to lock slowly, checking the fluid after each cycle. I did this 10 times (LH to RH and back).
-Then I unhooked the FSS and cranked the motor for about 10-15 sec. Checked the fluid level.
-Did another 5 lock to lock cycles, checking fluid level.
-Crank motor again (FSS unhooked) for another 10-15 sec.
-Then another 5 lock to lock cycles.
-Fired motor up and cranked lock to lock 5 times, checking fluid.
-Dropped wheels back on the ground and everything was smooth as silk.

That would be the fuel shut off solenoid on the ve pump, It will keep the engine from starting while you turn it over.

There are different ways to accomplish the same thing. I don't have hydroboost. My description was with 2 people doing the job, one.person filling keeping the, fluid level from dropping in the reservoir , while the other person starts and stops the truck, rotating lock to lock.

I found myself (while doing the process by myself, stopping, and starting like you have, written), intermittently roatating the wheel left to right, and still had no pressure until I revved the engine to 1200 rpm, then shutting it down. It finally had pressure.

I can easily see how you can easily burn up a pump if the fluid level drops too low, hence the reason for having a partner
