Steering column fell out!
Steering column fell out!
Hey guys to keep it short and quick my death wobble was the result of a bad steering gearbox. Anyways I am halfway through the install and the steering shaft (even the part above the rag joint) separated from the shaft attached to the wheel. I can get the two shafts lined up and partially mated but it doesn't seem to go all the way on like it did before.
Anyone had any experience with this? I don't think they are supposed to come apart like that. I can upload some pics if anyone would like.
Thanks, Tom

Like I mentioned the other day Tom...I really hoped it would go back together easily. But you might be having to pull a whole steering column now too.
Things just keep snowballing down hill for you!!
Wish I was a bit closer so I could give you a hand.

Just out of curiosity,
Did the steering gear plate break, the gear fell out, pulling the shaft with it ?
Not 100% sure, but I think the only option here is to remove the steering column itself and either rebuild on the bench, or simply replace with a boneyard unit. Here's the thread I remember about it..

I believe there is some type of plastic sleeve inside there that when it shatters renders the column useless. Maybe someone can chime in...
BOB ?

No when the PO (or a lazy mechanic) installed a Borgeson steering shaft they sheared off the pinch bolt onto the input shaft of the box. Time and rust made it appear as if there were no bolt there at all. When I was removing the box i couldn't separate it from the shaft. the shaft ended up just sliding right out with the box with no resistance. I thought it was no big deal until I tried to reassemble it.
I can get the end of the shaft lined up with the shaft that is bolted directly to the steering wheel, but they don't seem to want to mate like they did before, i need another 3 inches or so just to be short enough to fit onto the input perfectly.
Thanks,
Tom

O.E.M. steering columns are actually quite cheapie-junky in the way they are constructed, full of brittle plastic and pot-metal in important places where machined steel should have been.
Has anyone completely replaced their column with one from Borgeson or Flaming River ??; I have been tempted to do so.
