Steering Colum Burning smell Smoke

I got a 1992 w250. Ocassionaly the radio will cut out, but recently I had a burning smell and a little bit of smoke coming from inside the steering colum. Ive got the cover off and had a quick look but saw nothing. Anyone heard of this?

Thanks

Sounds like some of the wires that run down inside the steering column have rubber through and are shorting out. But your fuse panel is right under the steering column as well...could be something cooking in there as well.

Check the wires under your steering column and take a careful look inside your fuse panel, as the blower motor gets older it draws excessive current and starts to overheat the already undersized wires that feed through the ignition switch, mine melted the bottom cover to the steering column all of the wiring and melted my ignition switch, causing the starter to hang when I tried to start the engine.

This is what happened to mine,

Like Mr thrashingcows stated,

The smoke could also originate from the fuse panel and travel up the steering column like a chimney.

The factory wiring in these trucks is poorly designed and undersized.

If you add any accessory drawing over 1 amp I would use a relay to control it.

My headlight switch did that for a month before I found it, well it really found me when it burnt out.
