Spent the day putting new goodies on.
I put in the new thermostat and water pump first. I cant believe how easy it was. It took just over 10 minutes to do both. 2 bolts for the water pump, how much easier can it be. LOL
I also fabbed up a 4" exhaust and got it on. It looks and sounds sweet. I think tomorrow I will start fabbing up the 4" DP to go with it. It was a snug fit around the rear axle for some reason. I guess in all I have all the pipe and bends to do a complete 4" turbo back with a sweet 5" stainless tip for under $300. Oh, I also got the huge 4" strait thru muffler. Its alot quiter now than with the 3" strait pipe in front of the tire.
I may also see about tweeking the pump and timing a little more.
No smoke sux!!!

Yep, when I did my water pump I spent more time hosing the spilled antifreeze off the driveway than I did changing the pump. Sure beats doing it on a gasser V-8 where every accessory on the front of the motor bolts to the water pump.
Good work fabbing your own exhaust. I think I see homemade twins in your future...

Holsteinman,
I agree, I helped a friend change his pump (6.9) and counted 17 bolts on the pump and not to mention all the "other" stuff we had to remove just to get to it. I haven't seen the newer engines but if they are anything like the old ones it could turn into a half day or more project......

I started the old boy up last night and let it idle till the thermostst opened to warm up and it took over half an hour! Why does it take so long to get up to 195*? Does it idle that cool it takes over 30 minutes.
Also once its warm the idleing oil pressure drops to the mark right above "L". Maybe I just need to change my oil or maybe this is normal with the engine actually warm.

Oh, I forgot to mention to you guys too. I used to have a slight haze out the exhaust when it wouldnt warm up, but now that it runs at temp it is totaly clear and feels like it has a little better throttle responce and slightly quicker spool.
Does it idle that cool
As for oil pressure: I suggest that you put on a real oil pressure guage, at least temporarily, and see what your hot idle pressure really is. I cannot remember the spec from the manual though; my apologies, I am sure that someone else will help us out though.

A Diesel at idle is somehere around 98% air the rest fuel, so not much fuel not much heat
I try not to idle my Diesels much, I just start them wait for the oil pressure to come up and then take off and drive easy until there's some heat in them. At this time of the year that could be a ways down the road........

pwrtripls1: As others have said, idling will not warm these beast up, at least not very quickly, as you found out. Your haze is gone because there's now enough heat in the cylinders to burn all the fuel...that's why you HAVE to run a t-stat on these engines. Glad you got all that stuff squared away--it's cheap insurance. As for the oil pressure, the sender is probably tired out---very common. It's just below the injection pump, threaded into the block. The factory gauges in these old Dodges are about worthless, as well. A common place to splice an aftermarket gauge in is on the oil filter housing. There's a plugged port next to the one that feeds the turbo. I've heard you should get a 100psi gauge cause when they're cold, you can get close to that, if not over.
