Spent the day at the NY auto show

I just spent the day at the New York auto show. Had a great time and enjoyed seeing all the new stuff out there. Did like the Dodge 4500. A bit too big for my usage but a nice rig. I was finding out about the latest in Diesel tech out there. Most seem to have gone to the urea injection system. They tell me it promotes a late combustion of unburned fuel gasses in the exhaust to meet emission standards. I did not see any urea in the Cummins/ Dodge lineup. I see it in Mercedes and Ford however. Don't know about BMW diesels. I have a 5.9 so I'm not up on how Cummins has kept up with the current standards but is there a urea system in the future for Cummins ???????

The Ford guy tells me that it consists of a 3-4 gal. tank with an injection system into the exhaust. It's supposed to last 7-10k miles and will run about $300 or so to refill at current prices. So far it seems to only be available at the dealers but will be likely to come down in price if it becomes available on the outside market. Not sure if I like it. Don't know enough about it to make a decision yet. Claims to give mileages up into the low 20's using it. Have to see about that. Anyhow the show was good and worth the admission to get a closeup look see at what's out there.

Cheby uses it too, I thought the 4500 and 5500 dodges did too. MPG's in the low 20's is BS IMO. The ferds and the Chebys are not getting that!!

That's what I thought, but the FORD guy said Chevy had several diesels on display but did not show much tech. info on them. Ford definatly had more. Didn't see any tech stuff on the Cummins either. If it was there I could have missed it though.

I didn't check into the big Rams, so maybe they do also. I'm sure someone will pipe in and tell us for sure. Wish Dodge had paired up the Cummins with the Allison. That would make a good combination.

The cab and chassis models all got the URE starting in 2010. I was considering a CC model but went with a 3500 DRW instead.

What is it costing them to fill the Urea tank ????? How do they feel about puttin out that $$$$ to fill it ???? Are they getting the advertised distance between Urea fills. Interesting technology but comes with a pricetag. I would just like to know if the new diesels are living up to the hype. If so we all may be seeing it down the road.

haha thats the truth!! the only person that i have to believe on the subject would be my Gerneral Managers dad. he bought a 2011 F-250 4x4 Rancher and this truck will not ever have a trailer on it, just wanted a truck and on the highway it gets 22.

The cost i dont know, just depends on your driving habbits. the harder you use the truck the more it is going to use, the easiest thing to do is just get it topped off every oil change. it should just go through about 2 or 3 gallons. i beleave its a 5gallon tank but it will tell you how much more is left int the tank on your system setup in the dash

the fords is located next to were you put diesel into it, thats why you see the new fords with big honkin fuel doors....

Yep, I too have heard that the new Ford PSDs are really good on fuel. It looks like the urea system may be the way to go. I have seen the DEF in stores up here at about $10 per gallon, I believe.

its not injected into the motor, its injected into the exhaust. how can injecting anything into the exhaust help with mileage? it doesn't, from the reports we were getting from detroit a couple years ago when they were testing urea, the air coming out of the motor was cleaner than the air going in.

I was thinking the same thing. How can something injected at the exhaust help economy. The only thing I can come up with is that they are able to run the engine without all the emission junk so it puts out full efficiency and power but manage to take care of the emission at the exhaust end. we've seen various ways to handle the particulate problem. None worked very well. So it's like an engine with all the deletes on it. Have to keep an eye on this and see how well it works.
