Speedometer question after reading stickey

I have a 1993 4x4 5 spd on which the speedometer doesnt work. I have the VSS but am I suppose to have the gear ratio reducer too? When at the transfer case all I have sticking out of the xfer case is a hollow straight shaft. I removed this to see if the VSS would screw on and it doesnt. My question is did the previous owner loose Gear ratio reducer. The two wire plug is just hanging down from the harness.

Just went and got a haynes service manual and it shows the speedometer to be cable operated. Is this right? I dont have a cable hanging anywhere down there!

No cable on the late model trucks like yours.

Sounds like you are missing the reducer box. The VSS should screw directly to the Xfer case though, the speedo will just be way off.

Pics

Can you tell me what part I am missing? I tried putting the VSS on without that shiny part and it sould not go on. I removed the whole thing as you can see by the bit of oil that ran out.

You have a broken piece (shiny thing) of the old adapter gearbox on the xfer case there. When you pull it off the VSS (or a new adapter gearbox) should thread on. There may be a broken off stub stuck in the drive preventing you from inserting the VSS drive stub all the way, once you extract the broken piece it will all fit together.

Yep, exactly. That will put you about 15 mph fast at 60 IIRC. A new reducer box will fix that.

Any idea how to get that piece out. Not much room to work.

Just put a socket on the rusty nut and back the whole speedo drive out of the xfer case. Then you can access it real easy.

It looks like there's something stuck in the hole in the middle, hard to tell with the blurry pics. Does your camera have a macro mode?
