What Ben said. Didn't take me long to stop using the under-bed carrier. Not only difficult, but painful. I carry my spares in the bed secured against the back of the cab. Easy to get to and easy to check the tire pressure. Nothing more frustrating than to have a flat and find your spare just as flat.

Up here the spare tire carrier just rots off and drops your spare tire as you are going down the road.
I almost never see a working tire carrier on a 1st one that has been in New England for a while.

I am with Cougar, I just chuck a spare and a real floor jack in the back of my truck for most long trips I take.

Anyone ever have to lift the front of the W250 or W350 with the OEM bottle jack? Even on pavement it is hard. On a dirt road, forget it.
With 37 inch tires the OEM bottle jack is also near useless.

Grade 5 what ?

1/4" bolt
3/8" Bolt
1/2" bolt
9/16" Bolt

Each bolt has a different tensile strength. I've used Gr 5 bolts for my spare tire carrier, but they were 1/2" carriage bolts with the weight capacity of holding up Rosie Odonnell ........ Each.

Not sure what you're doing, but a 1/2" Gr 5 bolt will hold up tons of weight, vs a 1/4" bolt of any grade.

Buy your bolts from Grainger or from Fastenal, or a local QUALITY supplier. Home cheapo has some GR 2 bolts that I wouldn't attach my dog's chain to.

Speaking of spare tires...

Harbor freight isn't my goto gig, but I was truly surprised that this thing actaually worked.

My wife's car had a slow bead leak in the spare. Brought the tire to the local shop, and they didn't fix it, so I said, as my usual self, "if they can't fix it, do it yourself".

Had this tire changer in the garage, and finally got to use it. since the tire was just off, it wasn't as difficult as if it was on there for years. Lubricant, and lots of elbow grease, but it worked.

Harborchino freight to the rescue again.

No reaky bead nor more
